Lies
One little lie can change can change everything, first a few people start to believe what you said, than more, and more, and more people start to believe you, then you have to tell them all you lied, then everyone is mad at you. A novel that has to deal with this concept is "Speak" by Laurie Halse Anderson.
In the novel "Speak" there is a girl named Melinda, who is going into high school, but that summer Melinda attended a party, where there was alcohol, Melinda drank some of it, got drunk, and was raped by an older boy named Andy Evans. Melinda Obviously had to do something about this, so she called the police, as would you. Most people in Melinda's position would call 911 and scream that they just got raped, well that didn't happen, instead Melinda told the police that there was alcohol at the party. Melinda's situation is an actual real life problem, in fact a woman is raped every 2 minutes, and 59% of girls drink underage.
When school starts back up again, she sits on the bus and waits for a friend to get on, when she gets on she completely ignores her, same thing at school, all of Melinda's friends won't even make eye contact with her. Throughout the school year this keeps happening, and she knows exactly why, at the party, Melinda called the police saying there was alcohol at the party, because everyone got in trouble, they all blamed it on Melinda. Later on in the school year, Rachelle; one of Melinda's old friends, asked her what had really happened at the party, Melinda tells her she got raped by Andy Evans, and Rachelle doesn't believe her and walks furiously out of the hallway.
As you can see, because Melinda didn't tell the whole truth, everyone hated her, but if she told the police she had been raped than it would be possible for people to still be friends with Melinda. Even one little lie, or not telling the entire truth, can make everyone hate or love you, real fast.
Suprise!!!
Yeah it's my 4th birthday! Both of them are awake… good, now I don't have to wait to open my presents. They were both talking about something, occasionally one of them would raise their voice to the other one."Mom Can I-" Interrupting them was a bad idea.
"Go away, were talking!" He yelled, I could sense his anger. My eyes started to water up, just like all the other times I got yelled at. I sat down on the recliner. Looking at my collection of toys… this time he is yelling really loud, I had to cover my ears he was so loud. She was crying, same reason I was all the yelling, I go and try to comfort her.
"Please…Go out side Honey…"I didn't argue, with her. As I walked out, he punched the wall and made a giant hole, he must have super powers.
I sat on the concrete stairs outside the house, thinking about what a "perfect" birthday I could have had, with my uncle with onions around his eyes everyone laughing, dinosaur toys. A perfect birthday I could have had…I wonder what grandma got me.
Kindergarten
I've always liked fog… but I don't think it was ever foggy at school before, maybe I can play in the fog with one of my friends today... Christian thought.
Soon it was time for recess for Christian. A boy named Tyler came up to Christian if he wanted to play with him in the 'train'. Christian thought this kid Tyler was a pretty cool kid, and he was. During their play, a group of Second Graders came to play on the 'train'.
"We want to use the train, you stupid kindergartners!! !! "
Christian looked to Tyler… Tyler was fine, it was Christian who wasn't. Christian is a very, very, sensitive, and cried easily. Christian's eyes started to tear up… so many thoughts came flooding through, he reacted without thinking.
I've had it with these bullies… sure Tyler is fine, but I…I'm too weak I have to do something. At that moment I stuck up for myself and Tyler."Too bad were using it you stupid second graders!" I punched one of those obnoxious second grade girls… yes second grade girl. Uh-oh.
After the event, the second grader that Christian punched cried and cried, and her friends helped her up and brought her to the teacher where they reported what had just happened. The teacher looked right at Christian with eyes, that showed no mercy.
Look away! Look away!!! Try ignoring them, maybe everything will go O.K. I didn't go O.K.
"Hey! You there" yelled the old hag.
"who me?" I answered trying to be as innocent as can be.
"Did you punch one of those girls?"
"Well…" I looked at Tyler looking for help. "I don't know"
"It's a yes or no question!" God! I have heard that so many times, and I'm only 5!!!
"Yes" I said while trying to hide the fact I was about to cry.
"Go to the office you have detention!"
Christian walked through the halls trying to cry quietly, but it wasn't to quiet. He walked through the halls, past the Classroom, pass the nurses room. Eventually, Christian made it to the library where detention was held.
I walked in the room, Ti ti is here… no surprise she was a rebel child, never listened to dad. I gave the fat guy with the "spy suit" my slip.
"Sit over there" Fat Guy said while pointing to an empty table.
I sat down at the table, head down, crying. I hate detention.
Hey they Started it.
Short Conversation
"Hey Gurshak, anything new with you?"
"No, nothing at all …..… Well there is one thing…"
"And what would that be?"
" Governor says he's gonna hand pick 50 individuals to go explore the 'Wilderness' "
"Really? He's insane if he does,"
"I know, and the worst part is he said he would "hand pick" us,"
"Yeah because there is only 55 citizens, not includin' the soldiers,"
"Yeah"
"He's probably drunk again…"
"Probably? There hasn't been a day yet where he hasn't had a drink!"
"Yeah,"
"Yeah."
"So, how's life for ya'?"
"Good, good,"
"Well that's good to hear."
"And for you?
"Actually not so good Wanseck..."
"Really? What's going on"
"Mom just died…"
"Oh, really? I'm sorry…"
"No, no. Really it's OK, she was kind of a snob"
"Oh, so what's the bad news then"
"My mom died so now I can't ask her for money, or live in her basement…"
"Oh jeez…"
"I know right!"
"No, I mean your how old… almost 40 years old…"
"41 actually…"
"Sad"
"How?"
"You tell me what kind of a man lives in his mothers basement?"
"Me..."
"Well I hope the Governor picks you. You sad excuse for a man!!!"
"Whoa, whoa ,whoa………..whoa. Did we just become friends to enemies just by saying my mother died"
"Gosh… when you put it like that it sounds, so-so harsh. Oh, man. I'm sorry I didn't-"
"Yes…(Sniffle)… you already said it its too late."
"Oh, come on. You know I wouldn't do a thing like that."
"But you did!"
"Maybe I can make it up to you somehow…"
"Like let me live in your basement…?"
"….Uhhh…"
Ring…RING, RING, RING!
"Time to go…Bye"
"Bye"
After the announcements unfortunately both of the two were 'hand picked' by the Governor.
